Spark generator

circa 1850 - 1874

At the end of the 19th century, when it became possible to make long-lasting electric arcs by means of high alternating voltages, much research took place into the light that was generated in this way. By means of this spark generator the dimensions of such an electric arc can be adjusted with great precision. The curved dischargers, covered in red wax and with small polished discs at the end, are attached to a frame that can be moved horizontally in two directions via a so-called ‘dovetailed platform’ with setting screws. Next, the structure of the light of the electric arc can be studied with a spectroscope.
