Brass bell with wooden resonator at variable distance — Teylers Museum

Brass bell with wooden resonator at variable distance

When does a bell sound loudest? This device demonstrates that the sound intensity depends, among other things, of the distance between the wooden sound box and the brass bell. Every tone corresponds with a certain wavelength of the sound. Resonance (which is the vibration, simultaneous with the tone, of the air in the sound box) only occurs when the distance between the bell and the bottom of the sound box is in an exact proportion to this wavelength. In this demonstration model the sound box is mounted on a wooden board which can slide through the base of the bell support. Thus the resonance distance can be adjusted precisely
