Real Winters
Nov 07, 2015 to Mar 20, 2016
Exhibition Room
Can you think of a single subject that is more Dutch than a scene of people skating on the ice? The Golden Age was the heyday of the winter landscape. Then came a period of decline, but after around 1800 the genre enjoyed a revival, with artists such as Schelfhout, Jongkind, Mauve, and Breitner.
In this exhibition, for the first time, winter landscapes and skating scenes are combined in an overview that spans the long period from approximately 1780 to 1915 (from Van Strij to Mankes). These ‘winter painters’ take you on a journey from Romanticism through the Hague School and the innovative Tachtigers movement ('the Eighties') to the beginnings of abstract art.
