Small cylinder-shaped electrostatic generator, after Péclet

Does the composition of air affect the generation of electric charges? This small cylindrical frictional electrostatic generator designed to answer this question. The machine can be placed under a glass bell-jar in which various gasses can be put under various pressures. By rotating the handle, a spark is discharged at the outside of the apparatus, between two conductors. The length of the spark indicates the effect of the various gasses. The apparatus was devised by Jean Claude Péclet (1793-1857), a professor from Paris, and was then used mostly to demonstrate the effect of a ‘damp atmosphere’.
