Chromatic and spherical aberration are two aberrations that occur when an image is formed through lenses. This causes the image to be blurred and discoloured. In 1656 Christiaan Huygens constructed a combination of two plano-convex lenses, in which these aberrations were hardly visible. He succeeded by selecting a precisely determined ratio between the focal points of the lenses and their mutual distance. Huygens combination of two plano-convex lenses has been used until this day as eyepiece in telescopes and microscopes.
