Pair of lenses, not mounted, plano-convex and double-convex

1750 - 1774

Chromatic and spherical aberration are two aberrations that occur when an image is formed through lenses. This causes the image to be blurred and discoloured. In 1656 Christiaan Huygens constructed a combination of two plano-convex lenses, in which these aberrations were hardly visible. He succeeded by selecting a precisely determined ratio between the focal points of the lenses and their mutual distance. Huygens’ combination of two plano-convex lenses has been used until this day as eyepiece in telescopes and microscopes.
