Tripod microscope, after Edmond Culpeper (c. 1725)

This beautiful apparatus, made of wood, cardboard and leather, is a microscope. This type of microscope was devised by the English engraver and instrument maker Edmond Culpeper at the beginning of the eighteenth century. He started making microscopes around 1700. His microscopes were not only good, but also simple and affordable; that is the reason why his microscopes were in great demand throughout Europe. The main element Culpeper added to this model, is an adjustable mirror beneath the platform on which the object to be studied was placed. Thus the object could be illuminated from below. Donation W.E. Merens, 1929.
