Electromagnet for magnetic striction

Paris E. Ducretet

This apparatus serves only one purpose: demonstrating the audible effect of a magnetic field on the length of an iron rod. The rod is clamped at its centre. Two long coils are mounted at both sides of the rod. When a battery is connected to the coils, an electric current will run through the coils. A magnetic field is generated in the linear direction of the coils. This field affects the iron. On a micro-level, small magnets which attract each other are formed in the rod. This causes the rod to become somewhat shorter. When the current is switched off, the field disappears and the rod takes on the original length.
