Animal Parade
Artists and scientists have studied animals since time immemorial. Careful observation is an essential part of this. Scientific expeditions and diplomatic missions sometimes included illustrators. Meanwhile, others brought creatures home, stuffed them and made drawings of them. In the 19th century this led to a veritable explosion of books about animals of every kind, many of them beautifully illustrated.
Teylers Museum’s ‘Animal Parade’ is a playful tribute to the animal kingdom in all its diversity. The books come from its natural history library, and the figurines and prints belong to the museum’s art collection.
