William Hogarth
The English painter William Hogarth (1697-1764) has become known chiefly as a kind of precursor of the comic-book illustrator. He produced narrative prints in series: stories about a rake or libertine hoping to make his mark in the city, or a marriage based on money and therefore doomed to fail. These moralistic, satirical prints were extremely popular. They contain comical allusions to political and social events of the day. Teylers Museum has the artist's complete oeuvre of prints, and will be exhibiting a fine selection from them in the summer of 2015.
