Op maandag 5 november wordt rondom de unieke tentoonstelling Leonardo da Vinci een symposium georganiseerd in de Philharmonie in Haarlem.
Tijdens deze dag belichten acht Leonardo-specialisten uit binnen- en buitenland verschillende kanten van de meest veelzijdige kunstenaar uit de Renaissance. Zij zullen antwoord geven op vragen als: waarom streefde Leonardo naar een volledig begrip van de ‘oneindige werken van de natuur’ en de wetten waaraan zij gehoorzaamt? Wat is de geschiedenis van de unieke verzameling Leonardo-tekeningen in Windsor Castle? Waarom tekende Leonardo zo veel oude mannen en vrouwen met misvormde gezichten? Welke invloed oefende hij uit op schilders in Italië en de Lage Landen en hoe belangrijk was hij voor de opkomst van de komische schilderkunst in het zestiende-eeuwse Lombardije? In hoeverre zag Leonardo het menselijk gelaat als spiegel van de ziel? Wat weten we over de totstandkoming en invloed van Het Laatste Avondmaal?
De dag wordt gepresenteerd door Alexander van Reeuwijk en de voertaal is Engels. Het symposium begint om 9.45 uur en duurt tot ca. 17.00 uur. Natuurlijk maakt een bezoek aan de tentoonstelling in Teylers Museum deel uit van het programma.

The Face as Mirror of the Soul
Symposium accompanying the exhibition: Leonardo da Vinci at Teylers Museum, Haarlem
Monday, 5 November, Philharmonie Haarlem
In the autumn of 2018, Teylers Museum presents the first major exhibition in the Netherlands of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci. On Monday, 5 November, a symposium will be held in conjunction with this unique exhibition at the Philharmonie in Haarlem.
During this conference, a group of eight experts from the Netherlands and around the world will discuss different facets of the most versatile artist of the Renaissance. The event will offer new insights not only into Leonardo’s drawing techniques, his familiarity with the doctrine of physiognomy and the origins and meaning of his special interest in drawing people with bizarre faces, but also into the influence these drawings exerted on artists working in Northern Italy and the Netherlands. Given the central importance of the Last Supper for the exhibition’s topic, the conference will also consider the legacy of this famous work. Finally it will consider Leonardo’s views on culture.

The event will be conducted in English. The symposium starts at 9:45 a.m. and will end at approximately 5 p.m. A visit to the exhibition at Teylers Museum will naturally be part of the programme.
Admission: €65 (incl. lunch and admission to the exhibition).
