A Room to Hold the World

Pieter Teyler van der Hulst (1702-1778), a banker and silk merchant from Haarlem, was a man with a singular ideal: after his death, he wishes his fortune to be used for the betterment of society. His executors decided to build a magnificent museum behind their late friend's residence. It became the Oval Room. They stocked it with books, drawings, fossils, minerals and scientifc instruments. In this same Oval Room, time seems to have stood still. Now, after thorough restoration, the world's only authentic eighteenthcentury museum gallery can be admired in its original splendour.
