Spark micrometer; electrometer with a micrometer screw

The length of a spark can be measured with great precision by means of this spark micrometer. The distance between the spherical dischargers can be varied by means of adjusting screws and the distance can be read in tenths of millimetres on a very accurate scale (a so-called ‘vernier’). In 1889 the German physicist Friedrich Paschen determined with a similar precision spark discharger that, at a normal air pressure of 1 atmosphere, a gap of one centimetre requires a sparking voltage of nearly 30,000 Volt.
