Brass rod with paper streamers — Teylers Museum

Brass rod with paper streamers

This bundle of paper streamers was used to show that equal electric charges repulse each other. When the brass rod is fixed to a charged conductor, for example a Leyden jar, the electric charge will spread over the paper strips. As a result, each strip has the same charge and the paper strips will spread out because of the repulsion. The same will happen to your hair, if you let yourself be 'charged' by an electrostatic generator. The charge will spread over your complete body, including your hair. The hairs get an equal charge and will spread out. You can also give your hairs an equal charge by rubbing them, for example, with a balloon.
