These large glass containers were used in combination with a combustion apparatus such as the large apparatus in this showcase [219]. They were filled with a gas; three taps in the accompanying water reservoir regulated the pressure with which the gas was pushed from the holder to the combustion chamber. Martinus Van Marum himself developed several combustion apparatus and parts to study and demonstrate Lavoisier's combustion theories. He often improved them. These gas holders with glass water reservoirs are a simplified version of those Van Marum made earlier. They are more compact and easier to use.
